Background

A career spent in behavioural health

Mary has supported people through depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, sleep concerns, substance use, obsessive-compulsive patterns, mood disorders and thought disorders. That breadth matters, because it means fewer situations are unfamiliar.

She came to psychiatric practice from nursing. After several years as a registered nurse working with people living with mental health conditions, she saw how much advocacy was needed, and how much difference proper management of these conditions makes. She earned her master’s degree in nursing from Eastern Kentucky University.

As a minority woman, I understand how it feels to face challenges and uphill battles alone, when no one else can relate.

How Mary works

Three things worth knowing before your first appointment

None of this is complicated. It is simply how the work is done here, and it is worth saying out loud so you know what you are walking into.

Therapy and medication work best together

In mental health, a combination of therapy and medication is a great recipe for healing. Neither one is treated as the whole answer, and the balance is decided with you.

Trust comes first

Establishing a trusting relationship is the actual work of a first session, not a formality before it. Everything useful that follows depends on it.

Care is individualized

Each client is specific. Therapeutic strategies are tailored to the person in front of her, with the aim of improving overall quality of life rather than only reducing a symptom score.

Compassion, respect, evidence

Care that is grounded in what the evidence supports, delivered without judgement, and aimed at balance, resilience and emotional stability.
